It is firmware that is built into a computer's motherboard that controls the system's hardware and provides a bridge between the operating system and the hardware. The BIOS performs a power-on self-test (POST) and initializes the system's hardware before handing control over to the operating system's bootloader. The BIOS also provides a user interface for configuring system settings, such as the system clock and system security.
