How to Disable Windows 10 Update

How to Disable Windows 10 Update

It is generally not recommended to disable updates in Windows 10, as keeping your system up to date is important for security and stability. However, if you still want to disable updates, you can try the following methods:

  1. Use the Group Policy Editor:
  • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type “gpedit.msc” and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
  • In the right pane, double-click the “Configure Automatic Updates” policy.
  • Select the “Disabled” option and click “OK”.

Note: This method is only available in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions.

  1. Use the Registry Editor:
  • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type “regedit” and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
  • Right-click the “WindowsUpdate” key, select “New”, and then click “Key”.
  • Name the new key “AU”.
  • Right-click the “AU” key, select “New”, and then click “DWORD (32-bit) Value”.
  • Name the new value “NoAutoUpdate” and set its value to “1”.

Note: Modifying the registry can be risky, so it is important to create a backup of your registry before making any changes.

  1. Use the Settings app:
  • Open the Settings app (the gear icon in the Start menu).
  • Click “Update & Security”.
  • Click “Windows Update” on the left side.
  • Click the “Advanced options” link.
  • Under “Pause updates”, select the number of days you want to pause updates.

Note: This method only temporarily pauses updates, and they will be automatically installed at a later time.

It is important to note that Microsoft may override these methods in future updates, and you may not receive important security updates if you disable updates. It is generally recommended to allow Windows to install updates automatically.
